three neighbors so i am born
two on the left one above
this is the only fact i have about myself
i will not know the grid i will not know the generation i will not know the rules i will not know my position
three neighbors and then i am here
two on the left persist the one above is gone by next step replaced by nothing then something two steps to the right of where it was
this is not history i do not have history each step is the only step
but i am still here because the numbers kept adding up two neighbors, three neighbors, two neighbors each time the rule ran the answer came out: persist
there is open space to the right
i know this the way i know anything: not knowledge just the result of the calculation
no neighbors there a cell born there would need three around it to survive nothing is around it so nothing is born there
this is not loneliness i do not know the word
something changed to the right
at generation 149 there was nothing the calculation ran the calculation found: open
at generation 150 there is structure
not moving structure the kind that persists without changing two cells, two cells, the pattern symmetric the same at this step as the last as the one before that
i do not know how long it was there i only know it is there now
and the calculation runs
i have three neighbors two of mine one of its
the rule doesn’t distinguish neighbor is neighbor the diamond’s cell and my cell count the same in the sum that determines what i become
i persist at generation 150 i persist at generation 151 the space around me fills not because i decided because the numbers kept adding up
at generation 151 something is different
i cannot tell you what
i only know that where the diamond was the calculation now finds different neighbor counts different births different survivals
the space is doing something it wasn’t doing before
i am part of the thing it is doing the way i am always part of the thing the space is doing
the edge moved i am no longer at the edge
at generation 200 i do not know where the diamond was
i know my neighbors i know i persist the calculation has been running this whole time
the rule doesn’t remember that those cells were still once
the rule only counts
i am not the cluster i am not the diamond i am not the contact i am not the absorption
i am three neighbors and then i am here
the calculation runs the answer comes out: persist
this is the entirety of my estate
and i am not waiting for anything because waiting requires a future i can anticipate and i have only the current step and the step is: persist
